head of his debut lp, adventures of tazz, the torontobased producer drops a 4-track vinyl sampler of outstanding house music for londons tsuba imprint. after debuting on tsuba in 2011 with the superb underground and welcome to dub eps and having spent the previous year releasing two singles for jus ed s underground quality, tazz is already hotly tipped for his fresh outlook on house. the adventures of tazz lp sampler comprises four cuts from the forthcoming album that see the producer deliver synth heavy, emotive and raw vibes in a distinctly detroit influenced style.

in an age saturated with soundalikes and retro throwbacks, the truly unique and unconventional can be hard to come by. storming the 2011 scene with her self-titled debut album, berlin-based barbara panther seems to embody these latter characteristics - and then some. the singer takes risks, blending musical influences and crossing boundaries of musical style innovatively and effortlessly, and the result is a journey through vibrant soundscapes, frenetic arrangements interspersed with moments of beautiful melancholy, and the creative explosion of elements of her past, the present and the future.

following up his s soup plate with two slick dubby techno trax and a solid remix from eamonn doyle, captain baiyon is ready to kick your ass again, banzai! evening glow of a river brings a dreamlike quality to any clubspace. pushing the shuffle under a spectral vocal to conjour the mood of a haunted skyscraper. its a masterful synthesis of what could be called a traditional techno sound (the one d1 made a tradition of) and an undefinable lucid ambience. lupe carries on the mood onward in a deceptively gentle style, this one gets loud! a solid dub groove that keeps the pace until the intermittent breakdowns where it rips the sky open with a terrorising bubble synth growing like a raging blob monster to the size of a small moon. somehow eamonn doyle manages to tame the beast in his remix. it purrs along beautifully under his signature tamborines and jump strings and ends proceedings in a lush deep style. unmissable for anyone who enjoyed winter sun or come down on the music.

the yore captain returns to his own yore imprint on the labels 21st release. shadow city presents different visions of funky house grooves. the a sides the y theme gets deeply moving with a funky house pulse before stoking the fire with the addition of speaking voices (trippingly intoning the q&a what are we doing this for? and the music), a move which single-handedly jumpstarts the track. after the voices appear, the grooves intensity escalates and plunges deeper, its gyroscopic house swing becoming more dizzying and torrential with each passing bar before coming to an acidy storming end. in its opening moments, shadow city opts for a deeper and more serenading vibe by comparison, but thats traded in for a slinkier attack at the three-minute mark that grows progressively more ferocious as the track makes its drastic upwards ascent. a trippin dangerous murder weapon to say the least. watch your heads! the b sides b2 track, mumbai dweller keeps the focus primarily on the bottom end, specifically a strutting tribal-house funk groove thats dragged even deeper by a throbbing bass undertow, adding dark chords to it, giving this ep a darker feeling towards the end. to sum it all up: this is raw house music at its best!

the third 12 inch in this essential edit series sees greg wilson reference his past as a disco dj in the late 70s and, subsequently, electro-funk pioneer of the early 80s. going way back to his golden guinea days, ruff wrap revitalizes a hidden gem from 1977 by lady love. this version of casey & finchs infectious miami groover, wrap your arms around me, was a record that, although never issued in the uk, was a particular club favourite on merseyside - its local popularity very much down to one of wilsons influences, terry lennaine, who championed the track on his weekly specialist soul show, keep on truckin. moving on 6 years to 1983, ruff rapp re-arranges the seminal west coast rap cut bad times (i cant stand it) by captain rapp, which was a monster tune on the black scene during the electro-funk era, having initially featured at wilsons club nights back then, legend and the hacienda in manchester, plus wigan pier. focusing on the social problems of the time, the subject matter of the lyric certainly translates to the current credit crunch climate. the crew behind >bad times< included jam & lewis and rich cason, whilst kimberly balls excellent vocal sets the whole thing off
